Thermodynamic Systems infographic

I nformation graphics are a highly useful tool because they can represent complicated or esoteric information in an accessible, understandable and engaging form. Thermodynamics is a branch of physics that concerns temperature and the flow of heat in relation to energy and work - fundamental to how the universe changes over time. The first in a series, this infographic combines a special interest in sharing information, knowledge and ideas with a passion and respect for the power of effective visual communication - through expert design.

New SBC business card design

N ew design for a Simon Burdett Creative business card. Developed from the SBC identity established in 2014, this double sided business card design also features an illustration created for the website. Literally illustrating Simon Burdett Creative's image making capabilities, it combines with the typographic and layout skills on display. Efficient typography is always an essential problem to solve on a piece of design where the available space is minimal, such as with a business card. The design development is indicated by the arrow.

Particle tracks graphic

V ector based graphic which depicts the tracks of subatomic particles in a particle accelerator (such as the 'Large Hadron Collider'). This image was required for use in a printed report to suggest dynamism, powerful elements, unlocking the secrets etc. The basic technical requirement was for an overall image comprised of discreet sections that could be used together as a cover graphic and also separately throughout the report for devices such as visual punctuation and watermarks etc. The sections are indicated by the different colours.

'Game changer' seminar flyer

F our page flyer/mailer for a 'New Pension Freedoms' industry seminar. As a piece of multi-purpose marketing literature, it acts as a mailed and downloadable pdf advert for the seminar, an invite and also a programme. The cover states the seminar's proposition with bold metaphorical imagery, combined neatly with textual content and affiliate info. The inside design cleanly incorporates a detailed agenda outlining all of the day's events, as well as brief speaker biographies. The back is concerned with venue and booking details.

Various design updates

Brochure design updates for Creative Benefits. Projects include 'Finding your way out of the auto enrolment maze', featuring a distinctive maze graphic that appears throughout the document. As each subsequent instance is reached, more of the successful path through the maze is revealed. From the text supplied for "The Complete Auto Enrolment Service" brochure emerged the main title "Tick all the boxes". This led to a reasonably intuitive visual solution with an execution that was bold and vibrant but with a reassuring, personal feel.

'Sovereign of The Seas' Netherlands ads

Flash ads for DeAgostini. Flash is a commonly used online marketing tool and it remains a powerful, flexible and highly efficient method for bringing dynamic and rich interactive animated media to the web. Online advertising is still largely synonymous with Flash. The content and rough timeline were supplied and the animated transitions and tracking clickTag were coded in Actionscript accordingly. To three existing ad sizes four were added ('120x600', '468x60', '180x150' and '336x280') with all text translated into Dutch.

Ground Control To Major Tom Davies

Series of page designs for a book commissioned to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday. Presenting an irreverent alternative history of the subject, he is cast as a test pilot, space age pioneer and folk hero, a cross between Chuck Yeager and Space Oddity period David Bowie. They are styled after iconic magazine and book covers and even tie-in model kit merchandising. Through a mixture of photo-compositing and evocative typography they playfully reflect on some of his childhood (and adult) cultural, fictional and scientific interests.

2014: a davies odyssey

Following on from the irreverent 'Major Tom Davies' series of book page designs are these film posters. Continuing the theme of an alternate history, these imagine the life of Tom Davies as the subject of a biopic. Expanding on the 'pioneer' persona, the envisioned film is called 2014: a davies odyssey and is of course modelled after Stanley Kubrick's legendary 2001: a space odyssey. The typography and 70s conceptual art are closely based on real 2001 posters and the man himself is composited in from various source photos.

Pension Transfer Service Sales brochure

Brochure for Creative Benefits. To the right below is a flyer/poster based on the cover that required the addition of a text area. The gist of the proposition is that through The Pension Transfer Service, Creative Benefits can advise a customer on improving their pension deal so they can retire earlier or get a higher return on their investment. The sourced cover image effectively reflects the benefits of those outcomes by invoking both the aspirational notion of spoiling yourself and the relaxation that comes from peace of mind.

Online advertising is still largely synonymous with Flash. The content and rough timeline were supplied and the animated transitions and tracking clickTag were coded in Actionscript 3 accordingly with the added requirement that each ad loads a YouTube video upon request. The ad sizes produced were '728x90', '300x250' and '120x600'.

Various typographic solutions for Creative

Typography is a demanding design discipline which was once practiced by specialist typographers. Desktop publishing has brought typography to all graphic designers but Simon Burdett Creative has a particular love of type in its own right. Shown below are (primarily) typographic treatments from recent Creative Benefits jobs utilising the logo bubbles device. There's an MPU web ad, title treatments explored for a brochure cover and a much squarer version of a horizontal logo that was required for use on a particular website.

Powerpoint and Word templates and guidelines for in-house use

Layout templates and identity guideline manuals. Simon Burdett Creative designed the 'thought bubbles' logo and developed colour schemes that distinguish the 'mothership' brand and three sub-brands. Word and Powerpoint templates have now been supplied with usage guidelines suitable for their marketing team. These templates form a unified identity system for the material produced 'in-house' while the overall brand style allows a flexible approach to professionally designed 'bespoke' literature where appropriate.

Ardent 'Prezi'

Dynamic 'Prezi' presentation designed and built for Ardent Structural Engineers. The overall theme was presented as storyboards and the slide layouts were designed before being developed into the finished presentation. Ardent are often involved in large projects, sometimes on a geographical scale. This was the idea behind using a satellite image as an overview and large scale backdrop which the camera travels around while focusing in on each slide. The slide layout design suggests planning and technical precision.

'Tick all the boxes' sales brochure

Brochure designed for Creative Auto Enrolment, within Creative Benefits. They offer a complete management service for their clients, helping them through 'Auto Enrolment' legislation. The main key word was "Complete" from which emerged "Tick all the boxes". This led to a reasonably intuitive visual solution with an execution that was bold and vibrant but with a reassuring, personal feel. The imagery featured in the job required a fair amount of colour adjustment and some compositing, particularly with the highlighted line of text.

Creative Auto Enrolment web icons

Web icons

Two icons were proposed by Creative Benefits to indicate a client's Auto Enrolment status. These would appear on their website to signify either that they were ready to implement the legislation or that they have already implemented it. Presented below are three suggested routes. In effect they represent a mark of confidence, authenticity and trustworthiness. This may literally be word based certification stamps, pictorial metaphors for 'ready to start' and 'completion' or graphic symbols that simply say "ready" and "done".

Maze themed report

Dual branded report commissioned by workplace financial consultants Creative Benefits. It was set up for the reader to either view on screen or print as single pages. A maze graphic device was created to appear throughout the document. As each subsequent instance is reached, more of the successful path through the maze is revealed. The dual branded layout design had to incorporate both fairly bright blue and green. A darker tone introduced contrast but a bright gradient was used to reflect the collaborative relationship.

Extensively colour treated, composited imagery supports a pair of two-part headlines which reflect on a set of complementary professional abilities. 'Far Reaching Design - Design For Reaching' speaks of forward thinking, overall vision and innovation combined with thought provoking ideas and visual communication knowledge and experience that go a long way. 'Get Their Attention - Attention To Detail' invokes impact, dynamism and aesthetic flair combined with technical expertise and care and consideration for both projects and clients.

Animated category illustrations

Simon Burdett Creative projects fall within a variety of different categories and that is how the work examples on this site are organised. Although the designs below from the 'projects' page portfolio work as static illustrations, animation adds an extra dimension. When it comes to richly animated and interactive online content, the power, versatility and browser consistency of Flash remain unsurpassed. Most desktop and notebook computers support Flash and for other devices there are methods that emulate some, if not all, of its capabilities.

Fridge Imagework

This imagery for Marie Curie required a significant degree of manipulation/compositing. Firstly, the original pictures were effectively taken off the side of the fridge by overlaying a textured, shaded, metallic surface layer. Then, extra image content was created beyond the left and right edges, primarily though pixel 'cloning', in order to widen the composition proportions. Finally, the desired illustrative pictures were composited into place together with drawing pin style fridge magnets and a specially hand drawn marker pen ring.

Evolution of SBC branding and website

The slightly revised ident evokes a shield or a coat of arms look to suggest a pedigree of trustworthy expertise. Additionally it somewhat resembles a superhero emblem, alluding to a set of formidable skills. Arrows signify freedom of exploration and expression. 'Simon Says Display' are a family of display typefaces designed primarily for the new logotype and major headings etc in regular, bold and outline. Imagery was created specially for this site to illustrate the theme of reaching an audience through visual communication.

'Open day' literature

Variants of an Open Day poster layout for Hanwell Community Centre. A design that closely followed Ealing Council guidelines was initially requested, but a more colourful approach tailored to the subject was subsequently deemed more appropriate. The option to the left incorporates a spectrum effect reflecting the wide spectrum of activities available at the Community Centre. The right option places greater literal emphasis on the "Open day" title. Underneath is a typographic ad in the Ealing Council style and a specially created map.

'Car Chase' designs

Illustrative designs inspired by classic road movies and cinematic chase scenes. Widescreen influences include 'Vanishing Point', 'Bullitt', 'Mad Max' and even 'Smokey and The Bandit' ("we've got a long way to go and a short time to get there" is a tongue in cheek reference to a song lyric from that movie). The design below and the desert scene originally featured in an animated sequence. Meanwhile the silver version of the SBC car can be seen heading up the 'other projects' section of the portfolio on the projects page.

Brochure themes / cover ideas

'Get creative' and 'better performance' were some initial buzzwords/ideas for a Creative Benefits brochure. A theme encapsulating both ideas is automotive design so cover visuals depicting blueprints and conceptual drawings were created. It's generally a good thing to settle on a conceptual solution after having considered a couple of viable alternatives. To this end, "The benefits leap out at you" was suggested as another potential avenue. 3D cinema is a particularly topical angle to approach this from.

The former caters for mobile devices while Flash enables a richer desktop or notebook user experience. This can range from animated page turns to interactive panels or pages that allow users to navigate around any amount of extra content that is required within a magazine. This is achieved with custom built Actionscript Flash files. Produced with Boi Creative.

Webinar presentation slides

Online 'Prezi' presentation for a webinar promoting 'Local TV' by Charteris and Deluxe. Text for the key slides was supplied and an overall theme and storyboards were developed from these cues. The theme was loosely based on a journey from the very large scale (far out in space) zooming right down to the local level. This reinforced the story the presenters were telling and was particularly effective given the zoomability of the 'Prezi' system. The slides featured extensive image compositing. Visit prezi.com

Stylised image treatment

Having previously made use of a very high contrast black and white landscape photo, the client wished to apply the same visual treatment to some new landscape images. The treated windfarm shots are shown directly below with the untreated stock shots underneath. Some fairly involved image manipulation was required. Landscape and turbines were separately masked and converted to silhouettes. A little atmospheric haze was added with distance and the cloudy sky removed and replaced with a monochrome 'sunset'.

Double Magnum Force poster

This irreverent internal poster was commissioned to humorously honour an award winning employee. The main focus of the poster's message was how the employee in question had won the same two awards for the second year running, thus prompting the idea of the movie sequel poster and the tagline "He's back with double the awards!". That organically led the thinking to the iconic 'Dirty Harry' sequel 'Magnum Force' and it's 'double-barrelled' adaptation to "Double Magnum Force". Extensive image compositing was employed.

Homepage panel design

Specialist panel designs for a vending supplier site. The brief was to create a panel collecting together an ordering menu, a 'lifestream' live feed and a special announcement/competition area. It needed to be very much sales oriented and combine appetising product shots and other imagery with clear information in a rich but uncluttered design. A couple of different styles for each section were tried out in different combinations with one approach featuring simple pointer/labels as a unifying graphic device.

'The footies' awards identity

Alogo was required for 'The Footies', a proposed football awards ceremony that would also feature live music. A few different routes were explored, the client only stipulating a traditional pentagonal panelled football and a preference of typeface. Ultimately the gold 'footies' trophy was the preferred direction. Other ideas were less literally about the award and more generally symbolic of football, such as the England style badge and the stadium lights. A platinum disc style option was also investigated to introduce a musical flavour.

Presentation slides

Slide designs for a Charteris presentation to ASDA. These slides acted as 'scene setting' backdrops to important concepts rather than imparting detailed information, so a varied selection of metaphorical images were sourced. The cover slide on the other hand made use of a bold storefront photo naturalistically including the recipient's identity in situ. Meanwhile, other image assets called for Photoshop manipulation. 'Roll back' below was composited to suggest the rewards and value that loyalty to Charteris and its 'Managed Services' bring.

'10%' pension literature

Financial consultants Creative Benefits needed to produce a sales brochure promoting their '10% return/growth' company pension advice. Displayed here are three designs that show the development of the cover treatment. The 'thought bubbles' in the Creative Benefits logo (created by SBC) have been adapted in inventive ways on many covers. These ideas adapt the 'bubbles' to graphic depictions of '10%', 'growth' and the number '10'. The design to the right was ultimately preferred by the client.

recruit4online identity

This recruitment agency which specialises in online positions required an identity with two variations. One iteration would require the company name to be spelled out in full while the other abbreviated it to r4o. Since the need for flexible but consistent typography was central to the design problem, the omission of any extra elements that may increase the potential for unwanted distraction was advantageous in reaching an effective design solution. Simplicity and clarity were investigated through predominantly typographic routes.

G-code Logo

Some identity proposals for a medical technology engineering firm. The use of a hyphen in the name suggested a couple of treatments as shown here. The orange option actually includes a specialised drill bit integral to the 'MediCarve' technology. Thoughts about the general theme of precision engineering gave rise to the idea depicted in the blue option below. A design and manufacturing process is clearly suggested by the treatment of the letter 'O' and the blue colour scheme evokes a clean, clinical and serious approach.

Flash is a commonly used online marketing tool and remains a powerful, flexible and highly efficient method for bringing dynamic and rich interactive animated media to the web. Online advertising is still largely synonymous with Flash. Beginning from an approximate timeline/storyboard, animated iPhone assets, content transitions and the 'clickTag' (for tracking purposes) were all coded in Actionscript 3 for the 'Leaderboard' ad. This was then adapted for 'Banner', 'MPU' and 'Skyscraper' ads.

Illustrative typography / character illustration

Playing on the power of words to conjure up mental imagery, the compositions shown directly below present notions of personal philosophy/outlook in illustrative ways. Irrational thinking is literally unbalanced and "perspective" is warped to play a visual trick on the word as well as the metaphorical meaning of the phrase. Beneath them is 'plucky little robot'. Both illustration and character design, this brave diminutive droid opponent of 'Goliath' is the potential basis of games, tee shirts and all manner of other merchandise.

iPhone app icon and identity

I con and logo design for 'App & Pin', an iPhone app for adding extra security to 'tap and pay' type smartphone purchases. Icons present a particular communication challenge due to their limited dimensions while a logo will generally afford more flexibility. Thus it was most natural to design the icon first and then develop the essence of that into the app logo. The three routes shown play on the theme of security. The padlock option shows a very close relationship between icon and logo while the other two options show a looser but clear connection.
